Introduction

In this modern age, we are blessed with unparalleled access to a vast repository of knowledge, all at our fingertips. When confronted with uncertainty or doubt, we instinctively seek the source of information to scrutinize the veracity of claims. Our pursuit is not merely to expose errors but to discern the boundaries between truth and falsehood. Among the prevailing notions that have significantly impacted our ecclesiastical realm is the concept of “soul ties.” As you delve into this discourse, may you perceive my earnest quest for enlightenment firmly anchored in the pursuit of truth. I implore you, dear reader, to join me in this noble quest for truth, even if it requires standing alone. Let us commence our exploration with a precise definition, subsequently venturing into both affirmative and adverse facets. Ultimately, we shall delve into the scriptural teachings concerning our interpersonal relationships within the framework of soul ties.

Definition of Soul Ties:

It is worth noting that the venerable Merriam-Webster’s dictionary does not furnish us with a formal definition of the term “soul ties.” Instead, it elucidates the concept of soul mates and related topics. Embracing a spirit of receptivity, I embarked on a quest for knowledge, unearthing several definitions on the internet:

1. A “soul tie” is an enigmatic bond between two individuals, often described in the context of love at first sight or an obsession so intense that it evokes the sensation of two souls intertwined. Regrettably, some employ this notion to rationalize ungodly relationships, a practice diverging from the biblical tenets which disallow the existence of such “soul ties.”

2. Urban Dictionary, in its characteristic vernacular, defines it as a spiritual and emotional connection formed after engaging in intimate acts, often associated with sexual intercourse. Even when physically distant from the object of this connection, individuals still feel as if an indelible part of them remains entwined with the other, rendering them spiritually incomplete.

Understanding Soul Ties:

Strikingly, as we delve into the sacred Scriptures, we encounter no explicit mention of the term “soul ties.” This should pique our curiosity. Proponents of this concept frequently utilize close friendships as a vehicle for elucidating soul ties.

Positive Aspect: The Bible, however, does articulate the notion of profound friendships, exemplified in the relationship between David and Jonathan: “The soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul” (1 Samuel 18:1, KJV). This serves as a means of expressing Jonathan’s unwavering commitment and profound friendship with David. To ascribe to this passage a mystical fusion of actual souls would be an unwarranted extrapolation.

Negative Aspect: The Bible does caution against entering into ungodly relationships. Proverbs 1:10, 15 warns us against succumbing to the allure of sinners and treading their paths. While Scripture advises against inappropriate friendships, it refrains from describing any form of spiritual amalgamation of souls.

Scripture also unequivocally condemns fornication, as evidenced in 1 Corinthians 6:16, which underscores the physical union of bodies, with no mention of souls uniting. The Bible, in its wisdom, portrays evil as addictive, yet it remains conspicuously silent regarding the concept of “fragmented” or “divided” souls. In summary, the Bible provides lucid guidance for our lives, prescribing confession and forsaking of sin (1 John 1:9; John 8:11). It obviates the need for overly intricate human theories such as “soul ties.”

Biblical Perspective on Soul Ties:

Allow me to direct your attention to a poignant scriptural account: “Now it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul that the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself” (1 Samuel 18:1). What unfolds in this narrative? We are well acquainted with the backstory: David and Jonathan’s friendship was so profound that they entered into a covenant (1 Samuel 18:3). What motivated Jonathan to take this step? His profound love for David. Can we glean wisdom from this account? Undoubtedly, we can, as many have done throughout history.

Jonathan’s soul was intertwined with David’s, not in the ethereal sense but through an unshakeable friendship. The Hebrew term used here is “nephesh,” and it signifies a deeply ingrained relationship. In the genesis of creation, when God fashioned Eve from Adam’s rib, He declared their oneness in flesh, not in soul. This is the vantage point from which proponents of soul ties may draw their argument. However, we must remain cognizant of God’s original intent, which aimed to unify them in flesh, devoid of any implications regarding soul ties. How, then, does this translate for us, as New Testament believers? Did Christ initiate a new creation in which He is our confidant, knitting our souls together?

The author of Hebrews imparts a profound insight in Hebrews 10:1, declaring that the Law, with its recurring sacrifices, could never achieve perfection. In stark contrast, Jesus, as the consummate sacrifice, fulfilled the demands of the Law and extended friendship to those who accepted Him as their Lord and Savior. In John 15:13, Jesus articulates the depth of His love: “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” Indeed, He laid down His life for those whom He called friends.

Paul elucidates in 2 Corinthians 3:14 that through the knowledge of Christ, the veil is removed, allowing us to behold the Old Covenant with clarity. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, we discover a profound declaration: “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” Scripture proclaims that through God’s divine operation, a unique union of the soul with Christ emerges—a union distinct in nature from God’s natural providential influence on all spirits or mere associations founded on moral affinity or influence. It is a union of life, wherein the human spirit, while retaining its individuality and distinctiveness, is permeated and energized by the Spirit of Christ, becoming indissolubly one with Him. This grants humanity membership in the regenerated, believing, and justified collective of which Christ is the head.

It is imperative to differentiate this union with Christ from a mere alignment with a doctrinal system, external religious influences, organized religious institutions, or an idealized human archetype. Rather, it constitutes a personal, resurrected, living, and omnipresent connection with the Lord—a truth underscored by Dr. J. W. Alexander, who deems it “the central truth of all theology and of all religion.”

Apostle Paul expounds that this union surpasses mere coexistence or a union of flesh, as exemplified in 1 Samuel 18:1 between David and Jonathan. While there exists a moral connection between disparate souls—expressed in 1 Samuel 18:1, which depicts the bonding of Jonathan and David’s souls—in John 17:21, 26, Christ’s union with His people transcends such superficial love and empathy. He yearns for a vital connection to Himself, for, as He unequivocally states, “Apart from me, ye can do nothing” (John 15:5). His ultimate purpose, articulated throughout His final discourse, is to emphasize that mere love and sympathy are insufficient. The subject of His ultimate supplication is the vital fusion of His disciples with Himself.

The Consequences of Union with Christ:

Our exploration reveals that Christ’s union with humanity, manifested in His incarnation, entailed embracing the legal responsibilities of the human race. By doing so, He assumed the penalty for their sins, providing complete satisfaction to divine justice and removing external barriers to mankind’s reconciliation with God. Nevertheless, an internal obstacle endures—the malevolent affections, will, and consequent guilt of individual souls. Christ, in His union with believers, rectifies this final impediment, securing the subjective reconciliation of believers to God. In this way, Christ’s union with humanity achieves not only objective reconciliation but also subjective transformation.

Sustaining Union:

Empowered by divine grace, you possess the ability to emancipate yourself from ungodly influences and thoughts. Here are the essential steps:

1. Renew your mind and embrace the sufficiency of Christ’s finished work (Romans 12:1-2).

   a. Exercise authority over your thoughts, empowered by the Holy Spirit, who guides you toward godly thinking (Isaiah 55:8-9; 1 Corinthians 2:12-16; Philippians 4:8).

2. Foster fellowship with like-minded individuals dedicated to spiritual growth in Christ (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).

   a. Acknowledge that you have been liberated from the spirit of the world, as “greater is He that lives in you than he who lives in this world” (1 Corinthians 2:12; Ephesians 2:1-7; 1 Peter 1:13-15).

   b. Sanctify your life through immersion in God’s Word (John 17:14-17; Psalm 33:4-9; 2 Timothy 3:16).

In Conclusion:

As we draw this discourse to a close, let us heed the counsel of Hebrews 13:9, which admonishes against being swayed by diverse and alien teachings. Our hearts find strength in grace, not in dietary restrictions. It is imperative to recognize that the doctrine of soul ties, as expounded, is indeed a peculiar and unscriptural concept that finds its origins in deceptive influences. In accordance with 1 Timothy 4:1, we are forewarned that in the latter days, some will stray from the faith, ensnared by deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons.

It is a truism that malevolent forces influence all erroneous teachings and ensnare individuals in spiritual bondage. Only truth has the power to set us free (John 8:32). Spirits of heresy and falsehood operate in the realm of false doctrine (1 John 4:6). The doctrines that forbid marriage and impose dietary restrictions are but examples of doctrines inspired by malevolent forces.

In closing, permit me to share a piece of wisdom from my pastor: If any doctrine or teaching fails to glorify Christ and center on His redemptive work, it is best consigned to oblivion. May the blessings of discernment and enlightenment accompany you on your faith journey, dear reader. Do not hesitate to share your thoughts and insights; we all learn from one another.

Blessings in Christ,

Santosh Sharma
